CEM 101: THINK INSIDE IN THE BOX BEFORE YOU THINK OUTSIDE By Olamide Fabanwo

CREATING AN ENTREPRENEURIAL MINDSET (CEM)
‘’THINK INSIDE IN THE BOX BEFORE YOU THINK OUTSIDE’’
By Olamide Fabanwo

Hello and welcome! Don’t worry this is not a long talk, If e long, wetin I gain. Lol. Please note I’m not there yet o, we’re growing together but I just feel there are some things we need to point out so we won’t grow blindly and may we not grow blindly! If you need glasses to grow, wear it!

So yeah! I always tell people to think inside the box before you think outside because knowing what’s inside the box is the only way, I repeat the only way to get outside the box in a useful way. Don’t let motivational quotes deceive you o. Ehen.

Thinking outside the box simply means to think ‘imaginatively’ using new ideas instead of traditional or expected ideas. Kindly note the word ‘instead’. You cannot be creative if you do not know the ‘’expected way out of a problem’’. So first you need to ask yourself few questions like; Does the expected solution work? If it doesn’t work, what activity stops it from working? Teach yourself to look at problems expansively. Never be dismissive of a potential solution before you have thoroughly thought it through. You feel me? If you don’t, problem ti e niyen.

So I have a few tips that I have learned along the way that has aided me in getting outside the box. First, I identify the problem then I determine whether there’s a regular solution to the problem (you see I’m thinking inside the box, I’m not flying). So if there’s one, I think of how to improve it but if there’s none, I bring out everything that went into creating the problem. An example is you advertising your products and nobody is patronizing, then you start to think if your village people are not following you. NO! Have you thought of doing a giveaway? Nigerians like awoof o. Do a giveaway, and see how they’ll rush you. Like play like play, those that didn’t get it will now start to think ‘e be like say this person stuff make sense o, this one wey people rush am’. And please don’t dismiss a possible solution, go through every possibility until you know for a fact that it can or cannot be done. Also, note that what differentiates your idea from the former should be your aim. This life is not hard o, see when there’s a solution ba? Just think of a way you can improve it. BBM came through with helping people get close to each other by chatting and having a PIN attached to you. But look at WhatsApp, all they need is your phone number because you can’t call me without having my phone number! Boom! They took over. They improved on an existing solution

So please, don’t be fooled by the terminology that ‘’Always think outside the box’’, they will just give you a headache. Better don’t kee yasef. Omolomo. When crafting your ideas, think inside before you think outside.

Lastly, please learn to write down stuff. Ideas come to our heads randomly, never look down on any idea. One thing I tell people is think of something people do every day and how you can make it easier for them to do it. Me I don’t kuku talk too much, my actions and works do my talking because oyinbo say what? The running of mouth is detrimental to your importance. Taink you!
